On la-brats and lab-rats

Mr M's nick on msn reads, "oh why haven't they called me to be their labrat".

And I pondered a moment over the term "labrat" while conversing with ZM over skype.
"What is a la-brat?", I asked.

"A what? Spell it.", ZM replied.

"L-A-B-R-A-T"

There was silence. Then hysterical laughter.
"Lab-Rat. Lab-Rat!!"

I think that explains why he's a Cambridge undergrad and I ain't. HHMMPHH!
